Cardiff was once a vibrant coal town but, as Jim Ridings recounts in his excellent illustrated history, the boom lasted only thirteen years. Founded in 1899 with the discovery of a rich vein of coal, Cardiff was abandoned in 1912 when the mine closed. Today a historical marker indicates where the community once was. This may be an extraordinary opportunity for a historical archaeology project since a map of the town exists as do many photos.
