Westville is in Vermillion County, south of Danville, on the border of Indiana. A news story (May 31, 20221) on WCIA by Sarah Lehman explains that Westville started to boom in 1885 when a man named Mike Kelly started several coal mines. The Chicago and Eastern Illinois railroad line followed soon thereafter. And as a result of the employment opportunity offered by the coal mines, Westville became a melting pot of immigrants.
The town created a memorial in 1968 to its miners. We have not yet seen this memorial. Our information comes from these two sources:
